In the article Borup follows the development of the conception of poetry from the classical system of modes by Plato and Aristotle to the modern system of genres.
According to classical conceptions poetry can be written in different modes. But they all contain narrative and storytelling.
Thus, the 20th century concept of poetry as synonymous with the concept of ‘lyric poetry’ is a mistake stemming from pre-Romantic and Romantic poetics.
